      JACOB DIXON, WINCHESTER
The funeral took place in Winchester Wednesday afternoon of a highly respected and well-known resident of that town, when Jacob Dixon, aged 74 years, was laid to rest in Maple Ridge cemetery. He was born in Prescott county where he carried on farming until 36 years ago, and for the past 28 years had for most of the time been a resident of Winchester with the exception of short intervals spent in Islay, Alta., and in Chesterville where he carried on a livery business. Retiring from active business fourteen years ago he has since lived a retired life. He was a consistent member of the Methodist church and for 25 years was a member of Henderson Lodge A.F. & A.M. He is survived by his widow and four sons - G. A., N. H., AND J. L. of Winchester, and W. O. of Chesterville. Two sisters only survive, Mrs. James Rowe of Riceville and Mrs. John Rowe of Maxville; three sisters and two brothers, Mrs. A. McFall, Mrs. H. Quinn, Mrs. Henry Rowe, George and John Dixon having passed away.
The funeral under the direction of Henderson Lodge A.F. & A. M. was attended by many of the order from surrounding lodges in the Methodist church where the Rev. J. B. Waddell, the Pastor, conducted the services and preached a forceful sermon, during which the choir sang "God Will Take Care of You" and a solo entitled "Building for Eternity" was beautifully rendered by Mrs. Hutt. The pall-bearers were Messers. T. A. Scott, Dr. W. A. Brown, J. D. Stewart, C. B. Timmins, R. M. . . [Linda will copy the rest one day].

  • Notes
    • Bio writen by Garth Nelson Dixon. Borrowed from his tree at Genealogy.com:
The Dixon Family history begins with a United Empire Loyalist named Dixon or Dickson, who came to Canada about 1786 and settled in the Dundas/ Stormont/ Prescott County areas of the Ottawa Valley. At this point, little is known of the Dixons until about 1880. About this time, a Jacob Dixon from Pendleton County Prescott, eloped with Helen Maria Gates of Caledonia Township, Prescott County. It is believed that Jacob Dixon's family owned a hotel or tavern in Pendleton. Following their marriage, Maria and Jacob lived at Pendleton Station, where Jake owned a store. They had 4 sons, George Albert, Herbert Nelson, William Oscar and John Leslie. Some years later, the family moved to Winchester, Dundas County, where Jake owned a Hotel. In later years, he also started a wooden pump business in partnership with his son, John Leslie. Prior to 1918, this business became one of undertaking and furniture. Jake may also have owned a livery stable in Ottawa at some point. Jake Dixon died in 1925 and was buried in the family plot at Maple Ridge Cemetery just west of Chesterville, Dundas County, Ontario. Helen Maria died in 1951 and is also buried in Maple Ridge Cemetery. The Dixon home on Church Street in Winchester is now a bakeshop. Family names included in the Family Tree are Gates, McCauley, Latimer & Wylie.
    • (Research):according to the 1861 census, Jacob was about two years younger than John - born about 1853.
The 1881 census has them listed as Dickson
