Francis Ware has lived a full life of family, friends and travel, and on May 17, she reached a new milestone: her 100th birthday.

      By Charissa Bernard

Frances Adeline Johnson Ware was born on May 17, 1908, in Fahlun, Minn. The seventh of 11 children, Frances was born into a farming family.

Staying true to her roots, Frances stayed in Minnesota for college, attending the University of Minnesota. While visiting some family in Spicer, Minn., she met Claude Ware at a local dance. They courted for a few years, and were married on August 23, 1930.

The couple's first son, Darryl, was born in November of 1931, followed by second son, Don four years later.

"The best memories I have with my mom are the fishing times we had with some of her sisters and families," said younger son, Don. "We would go out on the lake in Minnesota and catch enough fish to make a shore dinner. Mom was always the one that was the last to stop fishing. We would make a fire and put the big cast iron skillet on the fire and fry up all the fish and a few potatoes and veggies and sit on the shore and have our dinner. We had a lot of fun times with mom and her sisters and a very enjoyable get-together with everyone."

The Wares lived in Spicer, Minn. and Willmar, Minn.

In 1942, the family moved to Oregon and Claude went to work for the Alcoa Aluminum plant in Troutdale. The Alcoa plant was later bought out by Reynolds Metals, where Claude became supervisor of an aluminum-producing production line.

In 1949, the family moved into their new home in Gresham, where Frances lived until moving to Woodburn in 2000.

After Claude retired, Reynolds Metals management asked him to travel to Venezuela and Iran to supervise the training of personnel producing aluminum. This traveling provided the couple with many experiences, which Frances remembers through the keepsakes from her stints in these foreign countries.

Claude preceded Frances in death on December 26, 1992 and Frances moved to Courtside Country Meadows in April 2007.

Courtside Country Meadows Life Enrichment Director, Holly Warner, said Frances has added a lot to their community.

"Frances is a very warm and sincere person," she said. "We all like to sit and visit with her and listen to her stories of the past. She sits with her friends at the same table for every meal. She takes care of herself, for the most part; she likes to see the children who come to read to the residents on Fridays. She is a very special lady. She is always dressed and makeup in place before she leaves her room. She is a true lady."

Along with her two sons, Frances has three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

As Frances will be turning 100 on May 17, organizers at Courtside Country Meadows are planning a surprise birthday celebration on May 16 in their living room and activity kitchen. The party will start at 2 p.m., and there will be plenty of cake and party decorations.

"It is still a secret to Frances," said Warner. "All the residents and staff will attend and some of the residents' family members who know Frances are coming. Anyone who knows Frances is invited to come."
