  • Notes
    • The following written by Kathy Richard in an email dated 11/8/2002:
Cecil McKercher was a highly intelligent woman who taught Russian, Latin, English and Drama at several Portland, Oregon High Schools. She was a top notch teacher and inspired Johnnie Ray, the singer, to pursue music. He was on the Johnny Carson Show one time after his first hit "The Little White Cloud that Cried" when Johnny asked him who was instrumental in your success and Johnnie replied, "Cecil McKercher, a teacher of mine from Cleveland High School." She was a painter and musician, disciplined, hard working and a linguist. She learned Russian from a woman whose husband started the Portland Youth Philharmonic and to whom she taught English. My parents still live in the house that she and Emma McKercher Harrington purchased back in the 1940's or so. It is a lovely house which housed my mom and dad's wedding reception some 51 years ago.

      Cecil never married.
